One year ago, thanks to my school, I got ESCP brochure and started to research on the internet. At that time, I was impressed with cross-campus bachelor program which requires all ESCP students to spend 3 years in 3 countries. I deeply know I am always eager to experience in different cities, not only for travelling, but to see how local people live and think, to explore how values and cultures are different from each other. When I looked through our course management, I found that besides all courses related to business such as Micro, Financial and managerial accounting and Marketing, we also have social science subject such as Sociology and psychology and humanity subject such as the world history and international relations and language courses. As a business student, I do believe all those courses would improve our understanding in the business world. What’s more, it is compulsory for all students in ESCP to fulfil at least 24 weeks internship during academic year (social impact project is accepted in the second year), which does not mean that we have to find jobs without any help, career services and strongly close relationship with corporations in ESCP would give us a hand to achieve our career plan.
Of course, it is not easy to start here. I remembered my first challenge is course problem. The world history and international relations bothered me a lot at the beginning. I do like this subject and it provides me more knowledge about European history and countries’ relations that I never know before. But because I am from China and we have never studied in detail about how European history looks like since 16th century, it was indeed much harder to understand logic behind those complicated relations. Also, I suffered a little bit when I started to learn a third language, Italian. I still remembered that my first Italian class was finished with the help of Chinese, English and French. It was totally messy because we were learning Italian in Italian. Things began to change when my best friend Magali Maurice came who is French and could understand more Italian due to similarities between Italian and French. Another difficulty was culture diffusion. I heard a lot about how western culture different from eastern culture when I was in China, but knowing something is not equal to truly understanding something. Since I was in ESCP Europe, I started to truly understand cultural differences between different countries and to learn how to get along well with each other from expression way to living habits, from values to working style. And right now, I am so proud to say that I improved to a large extent. But no matter how hard it is, we should always rise to challenge. The good result of all those sufferings are I began to change and for sure, become better. In terms of personality, I am more independent to live abroad, brave to talk with strange person, and confident to make friends from different countries. Regarding personal value, I see diverse cultures and become even more open-minded, tolerating differences and respecting each other. Importantly, I did an internship this summer in one company and I felt like I am more professional than before no matter it is about dressing style, or computer skills or understanding about business world. So up to now, I am so glad that things get better and better. Even challenges everywhere, all the time, as long as I am not afraid and positive to embrace them, I can get over it.
The last thing I would like to share is about teaching method and study method in ESCP Europe. Here, participation is accounted in assessment to students and we are encouraged to interact with professors. I strongly suggest to ask questions, speak out your opinion and listen carefully when other students share their views. It is a good chance to practice out expression ability and intake good points from others. Yes, interaction, is the most important word I would like to share. I know sometimes it is hard for our Chinese students since we are usually shy and concern about other’s perception, here in ESCP, let us start to change. About study method, I thought self-motivation should be one of quality we need to improve. It is not like high school any more. Do exercise, conduct research, review all materials and even explore more. They all need ourselves to be self-discipline and self-management so that we can push ourselves to study hard. More importantly, revision is a key to study. I think we are supposed to review each week at least one time each week, which not only helps us to continuous study but also better for final revision. Reviewing everything at the end of semester is not a wise way to study and of course, I do not believe the result finally would be satisfied enough.
Anyway, to be brief, it is so honored to share my experience in ESCP Europe to you and I have confident that you are going to experience things that your peers never have before! I am looking forward to seeing you soon!
My name is HE Junxuan. I am from China. I have chosen ESCP Europe for my undergraduate study. Because I can study business in 3 different countries in 3 years which considered as a unique life experience and you can experience and learn the differences of countries and culture which is very important for business study, basically it can broaden your mind. In addition, the course structure and teaching approach are suitable and attractive for me. What I really like is the concept and vision of the program. Moreover, it is one of the best business school in Europe, the reputation is very important. In ESCP Europe, our classes are composed of lectures, seminars and group work. The teaching approach is diverse and interactive. The class is very international, we have people with different backgrounds and share different thinking and visions which is very interesting. Besides study, since we are moving every year, you can feel and discover the world by traveling around Europe. I can find great food, experience different lifestyles, there is always something new that can make you excited and have new thinking. So far I have done my first year in Paris, now I am studying in Turin, Italy. The feeling of studying in Turin is totally different from last year, and the feeling of change and difference is so fantastic. I really like new things, changes, and challenges. You will understand my experiences and feeling by joining the program.
